Dent is our local fell and we love it! It is a popular fell for locals for dog walking, cycling and runners while also being in the first part of the Coast To Coast walk.
There are several options of where to start a walk but our favourite place is a little car park on the northern side that allows Muttley & Coco Pops immediate off lead walking. The path is a forestry road, simple to follow and a leisurely climb curling around the eastern side of the fell. We personally like a little path that snakes off to the right after about 10 minutes on the main path. It starts by a small quarry and goes directly in to the trees before levelling out and emerging from the woodland for views over towards Grike and the Ennerdale Vale.
At the end of this path it is a simple right turn and straight up to the summit of Dent. It can get a little boggy in areas but the trip to the top is worth the views. You can see far down the Cumbria coast, across to the Isle Of Man, the Southern coast of Scotland and right up to the north of the county.
It is a great fell to choose which way down you go as most paths are easy to follow and simple to navigate back to your starting point. Often we will drop down the back of Dent via quite a steep grass path to bring us on to the Coast To Coast path and walk back through the valley between Dent & Flat Fell.
