Grike is a local walk to us and is a leisurely stroll that gives some great views. Parking is available along Scaly Moss which is a road that rises and meanders from Ennerdale Bridge to Sellafield on the coast. By parking alongside Blakeley Raise the path is clear and sets off towards the North and into a wooded area. On a clear day you can see right across the southern coast of Scotland and over towards the Isle Of Man in the Irish Sea.
The path slowly rises to a gate and you enter a wooded area for about 15 minutes before you emerge to views over Kinniside Common.
The area was previously covered with trees which have now been felled and it leaves clear views of the path ahead and over to Lank Rigg, Iron Crag and Pillar in the distance. The walk is not difficult, and is a gentle Sunday afternoon stroll to reach the summit of Grike and the views over Ennerdale Valley.
With the added benefit of being on the West Coast, the paths are quiet, yet the views are as good as you get. You can see from the start of the Coast To Coast at St Bees in the west, right down the valley to Pillar & Haystacks in the distance.
There are options to continue on from Grike and even complete the Ennerdale round! (no mean feet!) or to drop down and return along the shores of Ennerdale Water to extend the route, but we have chosen just to retrace our steps and head back to a pint and Sunday lunch!
