This is one of Muttley’s & Coco Pops favourite walks. Starting from a small car park at Bridgend, the path meanders across a couple of fields with great views of Place Fell and the valley, north towards Ullswater and South towards Brothers Water. Across the couple of fields, over the bridge and the path opens up to a well used bridle way. It is a clear and steady path to ascend under Rake Crag and offers spectacular views of Helvellyn and the surrounding fells.
The final push towards Boredale Hause is always steeper than we remember from last time, but quickly levels and gives the calves a bit of a rest before the assent up Redgate Head. Here many paths converge and head off in different directions such as down the valley towards Howtown or across the tops towards Angle Tarn. The views are stunning at any point in the year and there is always plenty of spots to find a nice viewpoint for a cuppa and cake before commencing the second part of the climb to the summit of Place Fell. We are not a fan of steep drops when we are out and we experience a little slowness as we complete the final section by Steel Edge but the route is worth the views as the top is pleasantly domed.
You will never tire of the views from Place Fell, it is a fantastic place to enjoy lunch before choosing one of a number of paths down. On this route we chose to follow the path to High Dodd and down towards the banks of Ullswater. The path follows the banks of Ullswater for several miles and can be taken at a leisurely pace with plenty of places to stop, enjoy the views and have a cuppa. As you come to the end of Ullswater there are options to follow the path into Patterdale where the pub awaits for a quick pit stop or continue on the bridle way passing through Rooking, curling back under the face of Place Fell and onwards towards the original bridge crossing.
Overall, it is a great leisurely walk with clearly defined paths and plenty of areas for dogs to enjoy from hiding in ferns, a dip in the beck, plenty of steams to find a drink and the odd small tarn / bog to get muddy!
