Fell Walks In Cumbria

Scafell Pike, at 978 metres, is England's highest mountain and war memorial, cared for by the National Trust as a result of a gift after the war. The climb should not be underestimated; check weather conditions before setting off.

Scafell stands between Wasdale in the west and upper Eskdale to the east. The highest part of the fell is a ridge running south from Mickledore as far as Slight Side, which is counted as a separate fell by most guidebooks.

Helvellyn is the third-highest point both in England and in the Lake District. The scenery includes three deep glacial coves and two sharp-topped ridges on the eastern side, Striding Edge and Swirral Edge.

Its 931m summit is the fourth highest in the Lake District. It lies just north of the town of Keswick and dominates the skyline in this part of the northern lakes. It is the simplest of the Lake District mountains of this height to ascend.

Great End is the most northerly mountain in the Scafell chain. From the south it is simply a lump continuing this chain. From the north, it appears as an immense mountain, with an imposing north face rising above Sprinkling Tarn.

Bowfell is a pyramid-shaped mountain lying at the heart of the English Lake District. One of the most popular of the Lake District fells for walkers. It is listed in Alfred Wainwright's 'best half dozen' Lake District fells.

Great Gable is named for its appearance as a pyramid from Wasdale, though it is dome-shaped from most other directions. It is one of the most popular of the Lakeland fells, and there are many different routes to the summit.

Situated between the valleys of Ennerdale to the north and Wasdale to the south, it is the highest point of the Pillar group. The fell takes its name from Pillar Rock, a prominent feature on the Ennerdale side.

At 891m it is the second highest Wainwright in the Helvellyn range. It is located close to the southern end of the ridge, with Helvellyn to the north. Nethermost Pike lies between Thirlmere in the west and Ullswater in the east.

From the summit plateau of Helvellyn a rough slope drops to the start of Swirral Edge, and this narrow ridge curves gracefully down and then back up over half a mile, terminating at Catstye Cam.
